This front yard had many existing fruit trees which were a joy to the new homeowner. She requested a design that would allow her to grow an optimal amount of produce at home, all while conserving water. Raised vegetable beds and produce planters are tucked next to the backyard gate, fed by drip line irrigation. Drought-tolerant lavender and native grasses border the property, providing pollinator habitat. Tan gravel fills the in-between spaces, replacing a former lawn and suppressing weeds in a permeable layer while keeping the openness that the owner desired. Finally, an updated modern pathway flanked by diverse and colorful succulents lead to the front door.
A few months after installation, a male Anna’s Hummingbird moved in and is often heard defending his new territory!
