backyard birders
San leandro, ca

Two young first-time homeowners became enamored with birding during the pandemic. Their new backyard, however, was simply a rectangle of lawn surrounded by overgrown shrubs and trees. They wished to add more biodiversity, learn about gardening, and have a relaxing place to spend time together after work.

This garden was centered around providing food sources for birds and native pollinators year-round (not to mention, great views of their very active bird feeder!). Colorful native flowers were selected to bloom in succession from early spring through late fall. Plantings were kept low to keep this small space feeling open, yet with transitions in levels to create depth.

Two years into the project, the homeowners have observed eight different species of native bees!

Homeowners received a lawn conversion rebate from East Bay Municipal Water District!
