This backyard was inspired by the homeowner’s love of surfing and nearby Ocean Beach. Curved wooden elements represent driftwood and waves. A highlight is the snail-shaped outdoor shower, a must for the homeowner to rinse off after hitting the beach. The shower drains down a dry riverbed into a bioswale. Natural sand was left in place underneath the wooden boardwalk, with edible plants and native sand-adapted plants alongside. Living space is extended outdoors with a brick patio and fire pit and an enclosed wraparound composite wood deck. Native plants such as Blue Blossom (Ceanothus), Sages, Coast Buckwheat, Sand Verbena, and Seep Monkeyflower provide color and habitat for native pollinators. Miniature fruit trees, blueberries, and raised beds provide food for the homeowner and are adapted to the cool, foggy climate of the Outer Sunset.
